On March 28, 2017, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired this natural-color image of volcanic activity at Kambalny. Note the dark shading on the lower half of the scene; this is likely ash laying on top of the snow.
Located on the southern end of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Kambalny is a stratovolcano. Prior to this week, its last eruption may have been about 250 years ago.
