Lop Nur, also referred to as â€œThe Wandering Lake,â€ due to its frequent change in size and shape, is located in the eastern Xinjiang region. The saline lake dried up in the 1970s leaving behind a salt-encrusted lakebed.
In this image the mineral salts are displayed in blue-green, grey, and tan. Sand dunes in the southwest corner are reddish brown and folded rocks appear brick red and dark brown.
This Landsat 7 image was acquired on April 5, 2000. It is a false color image using ETM+ bands 7, 4, 2, and the panchromatic band. Lop Nur falls on Landsat WRS-2 Path 140 Row 32.
