Located on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, Klyuchevskaya (also spelled Kliuchevskoi) is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The latest eruptive period began in October 2019.
On April 21, 2020, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired this false-color image. The volcano puffed ash and steam, and a fresh lava flow worked its way down the southeast flank.
According to the Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), ash reached as high as 7 kilometers (23,000 feet) on April 21, leading to a code orange aviation warning for the area.
